The Lead Physician Assistant monitors and manages the day-to-day needs of the patients as requested by, in conjunction with and under the supervision of a physician/Director, APP-PA as well as oversees PA operations, schedules and performance.
This role accounts for approximately 15% of working hours in which responsibilities exceed that of what is described in the Physician Assistant job description.
In addition, the individual in this capacity is a Physician Assistant whose primary function is the co-management of patients, i.
e.
, their diagnoses, treatment and management, surgical assistance in concert with the surgeons within the recognized standards of practice as defined by the NJ State Department of Health and Hackensack Meridian Health.
Supervise Physician Assistants for General and Sub Specialties Daytime Hours, Nights/Weekends as needed Licensure, CME Time/Reimbursement Responsibilities In addition to the competency description documented in the published intranet, the lead PA oversees the practices and competencies of other PAs in the service.

Is proficient in and capable of educating other service PAs in physical examination of patients, the management of critical care patients, all operative procedures, bedside procedures, the coordination of care following discharge of patients.

Oversees daily operation to ensure appropriateness of patient visits and optimize efficiency / physician resources.
4.
Holds a higher-level knowledge base for cross service collaboration.
5.
Coordinates and ensures APP service coverage.
6.
Leads nursing and practitioner education.
7.
Develops and maintains PA schedules and PTO to ensure proper level of staffing for patient safety.
8.
Develops, manages and distributes OT opportunities and service call schedules.
9.
Meets with the department leader on a regular basis and works on joint departmental initiatives.
10.
Holds monthly PA service meeting to discuss team initiatives.
11.
Provides input for PA annual review.
12.
Ensures team compliance with Medical Staff guidelines, medical staff renewals, yearly PPDs and mandatory annual education.
13.
Assists in recruitment and facilitates the interviewing process for potential new staff members.
14.
Adheres to standards identified in the institutes organizational competencies.
15.
Develops PA incentive program and reviews yearly with administration.
16.
Facilitates the involvement of other PAs in research projects and quality improvement initiatives relating to improving patient satisfaction, patient safety, patient education and throughput.
17.
Leads in evidence based standardization of care projects, and the development of evidence based medicine protocols.
18.
Collaborates initiatives with other services.
19.
Develops and maintains structured PA shadow program to include gathering of resumes of interested candidates, overseeing year round program to coincide with the current AAPA recommendations needed for aspiring PAs to apply to a PA program.
20.
Responsible for the oversight of and orientation of rotating students, shadows and new team members.
21.
Develops and facilitates curriculum to rotating PA and medical students and develops rotation schedule.
22.
Provides education discussion and material to rotating students.
23.
Other duties and/or projects as assigned.
24.
Adheres to HMH Organizational competencies and standards of behavior.
QualificationsEducation, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required:
1.
Graduate of an accredited school.
2.
Minimum of 5 or more years of experience as a PA in specialty applying for.
3.
Extensive first assist surgical experience.
4.
Prior leadership position held.
5.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
6.
Proficient computer skills that may include but are not limited to Microsoft Office and/or Google Suite platforms.
Licenses and Certifications Required:
1.
Physician Assistant License.
2.
Controlled Drug Substance.
3.
Drug Enforcement Agency Certificate.
4.
AHA Basic Health Care Life Support HCP Certification.
